As Halloween nears, the National Fire Protection Association is reminding everyone to keep safety in mind.
Between 2019 and 2023, there was an average 832 homes fires that began with decorations. Almost half of those fires were due to the fact decorations were near heat, while a third of them were near candles.
To ensure everyone has a safe holiday season residents are encouraged to follow these simple tips from the NFPA:
- Keep dry decorations such as cornstalks, crepe paper, and dried flowers away from heat sources
- Keep candles in well-attended areas and keep them out of the path of trick and treaters
- Use glowsticks or battery-operated lights for jack-o-lanterns.
- Do not have costumes with parts that trail behind or if wearing a mask, make sure eye-holes are large enough to see clearly
- Check fire alarms and make sure exits have no decorations blocking the way out
