High School Sports:
–The Karns City Boys Basketball team defeated Coudersport 67-65 Saturday to win the District 9 2A championship. Nathan Waltman led the Gremlins with 22 points. Chase Beighley added 19. Karns City will face District 5 champion Conemaugh to open the PIAA playoffs Wednesday.
–Punxsutawney defeated Moniteau 60-37 in the Girls 3A title game Friday.
–Warren defeated Slippery Rock 40-39 to win the District 10 5A championship Saturday. Warren’s Emma Ruhlman hit three free throws with no time left on the clock for the victory.
–Upper St. Clair defeated Pine-Richland 56-53 Friday to win the Boys 6A WPIAL championship.
–Mohawk defeated North Catholic 54-48 Saturday to win the Girls 3A title.
–The North Allegheny Girls defeated Upper St. Clair 70-36 to defend their 6A championship.
–The New Castle Boys defeated Chartiers Valley 61-45 Saturday in the 5A championship. New Castle became the first boys team to capture 14 WPIAL titles, breaking a tie with Farrell.
Tonight –
–The North Catholic Boys will meet Lincoln Park in the WPIAL 4A championship. The game will be played at North Allegheny high school at 8pm.
Seneca Valley wrestler Alejandro Herrera-Rondon won his third state title in his four seasons with a 3-1 win over Waynesburg’s Rocco Welsh Saturday. He completes a 39-0 season and was named the state tournament’s outstanding wrestler. He finished his high school career with a record of 175-14.
The Raiders Dylan Chappell finished runner-up at 132 pounds.
The Freeport Girls Bowling team won the Pennsylvania Western Regional Championship Saturday in Pittsburgh. The Yellow Jacket Girls qualified third overall. They defeated McKeesport 2-0 in the semifinal roll-off, then went on to defeat Greensburg-Salem 2-1 in the best-of-three title match. Julia Cummings led Freeport in qualifying with a 571 series. Mackenzie Livingston added a 569. The top three teams advanced to this week’s state championships, also in Pittsburgh. Freeport held off the Butler Girls by 28 pins to gain entry into the championship roll-off and the state championships.
Butler freshman Kelsee McConnell reached the state singles championships in Pittsburgh this week, with a semifinal finish at the Western Regional championships. Kelsee qualified fourth overall before winning a quarterfinal stepladder match. She lost in the semifinals 204-189 to eventual regional champion Lydia Flanagan of Burrell.
