The Pennsylvania Independent Fiscal Office has released a report that indicates a return to pre-pandemic levels for SNAP recipients and decreased error payment rates.
Due to the Big Beautiful Bill going into effect with new and expanded work requirements, SNAP participation has gone down to 13.4 percent in June, the same as June 2019. As well as 14 percent decline in recipients compared to the June 2024 peak.
The state budget currently has increased by $87 million due to the state having to take more administrative costs due to the Big Beautiful Bill.
The payment error rate has also decreased to 9.2 percent. But, If the state cannot get that number below 8 percent, the state would have to pay $380 million of benefit costs. If the error rate drops below 8 percent the cost will be $190 million to the state.
