The New York Islanders shutout the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-0 last night. Both Islanders goals were scored on the power play. The Pens went 0-for-2 on their own power plays. Casey DeSmith got the start in goal, and stopped 28 of 30 shots.
The Pens are now 11-8-1 overall, and in fifth place in the East Division. The top four teams will make the playoffs. They will open a five-game homestand Tuesday with the first of three consecutive games against the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Pens had defeated the Islanders 4-3 in overtime Saturday thanks to a Kris Letang game-winning goal. Entering Sunday’s game, Letang had accumulated 11 points in his last nine games. No defenseman in the NHL had picked up more points in that span.
