Work on Chicora Elementary is almost complete but when it opens next school year it will have a new name.
Come September, Chicora Elementary will be renamed Karns City Area Elementary School. While most structures in the building are complete, there is still work to be done on the band room and to clean out recently discovered mold on the roof.
No student or teacher has come in contact with the mold as it has been located on the outer portion of the roof of the building.
The completion of the gymnasium will take place in September, as new bleachers, flooring, and lighting will be added.
For Superintendent Dr. Eric Ritzert this project has been a long time coming through Covid, rising construction costs, and two votes to close Sugarcreek Elementary.
“The formal process of the closing of Sugarcreek Elementary twice. The board had to vote on closing Sugarcreek twice, because after the first time we had to keep it open due to delays in the project. It’s definitely a relief that we can see the end is near and we’ll be able to allow our students to benefit for all they get when they’re in one building,” Ritzert said.
With the move no jobs will be lost, in fact according Ritzert the school is looking to add four new teachers to replace retiring teachers.
