Last month was the hottest January on record.
U.S. scientists say the global average land and ocean surface temperature was just over two degrees above the average January temperatures for the 20th century. That made this past January the warmest first month of the year since records started being kept in 1880.
Warmer temperatures mean melting snow and ice. Scientists say Antarctic sea ice was 9.8 percent below the average.
