A state lawmaker is proposing a new bill that would move up the swearing-in date of newly elected officials.
Republican State Rep. Russ Diamond of Lebanon County has proposed a bill that would swear newly elected officials on December 1st instead of January.
Diamond says that the month of December sees over $2.3 million in salaries paid out while the General Assembly sits idle.
The legislation would replace a single phrase in Article II section 4 of the Pennsylvania Constitution,” first Tuesday,” with “first day of December.”
State lawmakers, judges, and the executive branch will see a 3.4% yearly salary increase for 2025 under a state law that automatically raises the federal consumer inflation figure.
