Labor shortages are being seen in a variety of industries, including public pools which can’t find enough lifeguards.
While there’s it’s difficult to draw a specific reason for the shortage—there was one particularly intriguing fallout of the pandemic; no lifeguarding classes.
Butler Area School District officials say they had to cancel all their lifeguarding classes this year because of COVID restrictions. In fact, pools were closed throughout the school year for safety reasons.
Students typically will sign up for the class during the school year and have their certification available for the summer.
We also heard from lifeguard instructors that some people may be hesitant to sign up for a job that inherently brings you into close contact with other individuals.
Meanwhile, some experts just site the lack of swimming pool lifeguards as another casualty of the ongoing labor shortage.
Either way, Butler County is offering more money per hour now along with other incentives to recruit lifeguards this summer.
