A state program to help people in need to pay heating bills has been delayed as a result of the ongoing shutdown of the federal government.
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as LIHEAP, helps low-income renters and homeowners pay heating bills.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services which usually opens the program to applicants around this time of year, the necessary federal funding has not been distributed resulting in a delay that could push into December.
Officials say that LIHEAP helps about 300,000 Pennsylvanians yearly through the distribution of over $200 million.
Without LIHEAP, those seeking assistance are asked to contact a utility assistance program.
