A bill that would allow local police to use radar enforcement is a step closer to becoming law.
The state Senate approved the bill by a 49-1 vote earlier this week. Right now, only state police are allowed to use radar to monitor drivers speed.
In order for local police to use radar, municipalities would have to pass an ordinance under the bill. Supporters of the bill say that it also tries to limit “policing for profit” by mandating only 10 percent of a municipality’s local budget come from speeding tickets.
The bill now moves back to the House of Representatives.
