Negotiators representing the Mars Area School Board and the Mars Area Education Association continue to seek common ground on a new contract for teachers.
Board member Jennifer DiCuccio is on the negotiating committee and chose to make certain aspects of the competing offers public in the interest of transparency with parents and taxpayers.
According to DiCuccio, the board is seeking a three-year contract with an annual increase to total wages of 3.25% while the teachers’ union is looking for a five-year deal with an average increase of 6% yearly. Although some compromises have already been agreed to, the board remains concerned about continually rising health care costs.
A representative of the Mars Area Education Association also spoke at the meeting earlier this week and urged the board to make a fair offer.
