The measles outbreak in Pennsylvania continues to grow.
Yesterday, the Department of Health confirmed the measles-related deaths of two people in Lancaster County. That is the first deaths attributed to measles in 35 years in Pennsylvania.
Infectious disease specialist Dr. Amesh Adalja says this stems from a growing trend of not getting children vaccinated.
“Measles is something you don’t want to minimize, and the solution is very simple, which is the solution we’ve had since the 1960s, and that is to get vaccination rates higher or we’ll see more deaths occur,” Adalja said.
Adalja also warns of measles spreading.
“I do think as schools open, we’ll start to see an increase in cases. What the cadence or trajectory is, I can’t predict,” Adalja said. “That will be based on factors, including the level of vaccination in a given school.”
