The old Mercer Road Volunteer Fire Company building will likely be repurposed following a decision by the Butler Township Zoning Hearing Board.
After hearing an appeal made by the perspective owners of the property, the Board voted to grant a special exception that will allow an entirely indoor baseball training facility to operate.
The special exception was required because that use is not specifically stated in property zoned C2 Commercial. The prospective owners plan to close on the purchase of the property by the end of this month. The building is owned by Mercer Road VFC but has been vacant since 2019.
Although the building is currently 40 feet long, the owners plan to apply for a land development and building permit to add another 25 feet which would allow for two trainers to each instruct one student in hitting or pitching.
The facility would be open 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays as well as earlier on weekends. Construction is expected to begin sometime this summer with a likely opening in the fall of this year.
