A statement issued by Steelers President Art Rooney II shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday has confirmed what multiple sources reported a short time earlier that Mike Tomlin has resigned as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Although the Steelers were defeated by the Houston Texans in a Monday night playoff matchup, Rooney thanked Tomlin for 19 years of “hard work, dedication, and success” resulting in the franchise’s sixth Super Bowl Championship, 13 playoff appearances, eight AFC North titles, and zero losing seasons.
The Steelers will now begin only their fourth head coaching search since 1969.
