This weekend the Miracle League of South Western Pennsylvania and Pirates Charities will be celebrating 15 years by hosting their 2nd All-Star game at UPMC Passavant Sports Complex.
The Miracle League gives children and adults with physical or mental disabilities a chance to play baseball. Visiting teams will be from Cranberry Township, Murrysville, Altoona, Indiana, South Hills, Wheeling, W.Va., and Bradenton, Florida.
Committed to building ballfields that can accommodate children and adults with special needs, the Miracle Leagues helps designs parks with all-weather rubberized surface that is handicap accessible, covered dugouts, and no raised surfaces to interfere with crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs.
“The growth has just been tremendous. There are people who originally signed up are still playing with us today. There are also volunteers who initially signed up that are still with us today,” Kevin Delaney, Vice-President and Miracle League Coordinator, said.
“It’s just been a tremendous experience,” Delaney added.
He also says the time has just flown by and never knew what the league would become.
“15 years has gone by super quick. Who knew 15 years ago where we would end up today. I think we were all just kind of getting into it and not sure what was going to happen,” Delaney said. “But time has just flown by.”
After the festivities Saturday the Pirates have invited the players to the Sunday afternoon Pirates game.
