PennDOT may soon be updating systems to more efficiently update vehicle insurance coverage.
Currently, state law requires PennDOT to suspend vehicle registrations for three months if they are not informed of a change of insurance. A new state law would use an online verification system before suspending registrations.
Typically, what would happen is after someone cancels their insurance the insurer is required to inform PennDOT. The person canceling their insurance would need to inform PennDOT of the new insurance. This law will remove the second step.
The bill was unanimously passed in the house and senate and now heads to Governor Josh Shapiro’s desk to be signed into law.
