Starting next week, a new emergency alert will be sent to mobile phones during certain severe storms.
The National Weather Service announced that the new category of “destructive” severe thunderstorms will now trigger emergency alerts. That means hail that is over 2.75 inches in diameter and winds that are above 80 miles per hour.
Officials say these storms are rare, but can be very dangerous and they hope sending alerts to mobile phones will help promote immediate action.
These new alerts become active on Monday.
