The new owner of the former Butler Junior High and Middle School is seeking a revision of city zoning ordinance for his plans for the facility.
Steve Mitnick spoke to Butler City Council at Thursday’s meeting about plans for about 300 storage units along with a number of salon studios for hair, nail, and tattoo businesses. Mitnick also plans to preserve the auditorium for community use, which he believes would bring additional commerce to the downtown area.
The self-storage would allow for 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. access with a keypad as well as outside lighting, the ability for individual locks, and 24-hour video camera surveillance. Attorneys representing Mitnick suggested that the city consider amending their zoning ordinance to allow for some self-storage conditional use in areas zoned residential 3.
The City Zoning Board would need to make a recommendation on this proposal after receiving a request from either the developer or City Council. No Council members would commit to making the request, but they did say they would think about the proposal. This project is currently three weeks into a 120-day contingency pending zoning approval.
