A new policy adopted by the PIAA will change how schools are grouped in the six classifications.
The groups are always based on school enrollment numbers, however there has been a caveat in the last couple of years. The PIAA only counts 10 percent students who are in vo-tech, cyber, or charter schools. So if a school had 300 students and 50 were enrolled in vo-tech, cyber, or charter schools, the PIAA would only count 10 percent of the 50. Meaning the enrollment would be 305 for athletic purposes.
Under the new policy, all students will be counted.
Local athletic leaders believe that could lead to an increase in the number of teams that participate in the 6A classification, which Butler athletics currently compete.
The new classifications will go into effect next school year.
