The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has some tips to make sure Valentine’s Day doesn’t end with a call to the fire department.
The NFPA says that those who plan to cook a meal should stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food. Have a “kid and pet-free zone” of at least three feet around the stove. Also, be sure to keep a lid nearby when cooking so if a grease fire starts, the lid can be put on the pan and the burner turned off to put out the fire.
According to the NFPA, candles left unattended are another of the main causes of home fires, so don’t use lit candles in bedrooms, bathrooms, and sleeping areas. Instead, use stable candleholders or place candles where they cannot be easily knocked over, and keep them at least one foot away from anything that can burn. Store matches and lighters up high, out of children’s reach, preferably in a locked cabinet. Finally, blow out candles when leaving the room or going to bed.
