With the freezing temperatures in store today, fire officials are urging people to be careful when heating their homes.
Nearly half of all home heating equipment fires happen between December and February.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters are most often responsible for home heating equipment fires.
They encourage keeping flammable items at least three feet away from space heaters. They also say to turn the portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
Also, make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are located throughout the home and test them monthly. More information about safety during cold weather, visit the NFPA website.
