Even though temperatures have increased a bit over the past couple of days, fire officials continue to urge people to be careful when heating homes.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, space heaters and heating stoves are responsible for about one-third of home heating equipment fires, with potential danger also coming from carbon monoxide.
They encourage keeping flammable items at least three feet away from any heat source. They also say to turn the portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
Nearly half of all home heating equipment fires happen between December and February. Visit the NFPA website for safety tips, information, and resources.
