Local leaders celebrated the completion of the latest phase of the Freedom Road expansion project yesterday in Cranberry Township.
Phase Two of the Freedom Road Expansion project first broke ground in 2022. It now features new turning lanes, new traffic signals, and widening from Haine School to Powell Roads.
Butler County Commissioner Leslie Osche sees the corridor upgrade not just impacting Butler County but the entire region.
“We have so many different things coming through this corridor that contribute to the vitality of this region,” Osche said. “This was really an important project. And even the counties around us recognized that and we were grateful.”
Chairman of the Board of Supervisors for Cranberry Township Bruce Hezlep sees the completion of this project doing two things.
“It’s going to expand and make it easier to get around in the lower part of the township. This is a major thoroughfare in the township,” Hezlep said. “The major goal is to connect Beaver County with the Allegheny River on the other side of Route 228.”
This effort to expand Freedom Road came after the County and other partners secured $20 million to improve Commonwealth Drive to Haine School Road. The Phase Two project was aided by a $25 million federal BUILD grant.
Phase three of the project will cost an estimated $110 million with the county ready to put forward $60 million. The county will be also looking for money from the state and federal levels for the remaining funding needed.
