As the temperatures get colder, there’s a better chance for ice on the roads.
That means PennDOT and local road crews will be spreading salt to make the streets safer. However, Sparky Mares of PennDOT says to make sure you give those trucks enough space.
“One of the biggest things is that people get behind us when we’re spreading salt, and they have their high beams on and they’re too close…the salt is white, their headlights are white, and you’re looking in the mirror and you can’t tell if your putting any salt down,” Mares said. “Stay back 500 feet and keep your low beams on.”
Mares also reminds drivers that it’s illegal to pass any plow trucks on a single lane road. He says police officers are on high alert for those drivers and that penalties can be severe.
