Statewide officials are reminding drivers to be aware of the heights of bridges when driving large vehicles.
The “Check Your Height, Know It’s Right” campaign is currently underway with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation encouraging drivers to make sure they can fit under a bridge before attempting to drive there.
PennDOT says between 2013 and 2023 there were over 600 bridges or other overhead structures hit which damaged vehicles and infrastructure as well as caused traffic delays and put emergency responders at risk.
This public awareness campaign involves public outreach targeting commercial driver’s license holders and non-commercial drivers operating commercial trucks, leased trucks (such as delivery and moving box-type trucks), and recreational vehicles.
Vehicles and loads taller than 13 and a half feet must apply for a Special Hauling Permit. All bridges with a vertical clearance of less than 14 and a half feet have signage with low-clearance warnings, both at the bridge and in advance of the structure.
