As motorists eyeing a long weekend hit the highways, officials are reminding drivers to travel with extra care.
Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, which is the most popular season to travel the PA Turnpike. The PA Turnpike Commission expects to receive more than 2.1 million vehicles from Friday through Monday which is nearly one million more than last year.
Traffic is expected to be the heaviest this afternoon and the lightest on Sunday. Those who are fully vaccinated are not required to wear masks in the service plazas although there may be some delays as staffing levels are lower as a result of the pandemic.
To help accommodate heavier holiday traffic, the Turnpike has suspended maintenance work and has all available lanes open in each direction through 11 p.m. on Monday, May 31st.
