Pennsylvania American Water is requesting a rate hike that could possibly take effect sometime next year.
The company sent letters to customers earlier this week informing them of the proposed hike, which would see a nearly 25 percent increase in the monthly bill for customers.
For example, a homeowner paying about $70 per month would see their bill increase to just over $88.
PA American Water officials say the rate increase is happening because of infrastructure upgrades they are planning for the future.
“This is really reflecting a $1 billion water and wastewater investment that we envision being made by 2025 around the Commonwealth,” Gary Lobaugh, senior manager of government affairs for Pennsylvania American Water said.
The proposed increase now goes to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. If approved, the rate hike could go into effect in August of next year.
