With the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe versus Wade released Friday morning; local lawmakers are sharing their thoughts.
Rep. Marci Mustello (R-Butler) issued the following statement:
“I believe in the sanctity of life and the need for policies that strengthen our families. I am committed to supporting legislation to protect the lives of unborn children, mothers and families. My House Republican colleagues and I have led the charge in passing legislation that respects the dignity of the born and unborn. This includes legislation that would prohibit abortions based on a diagnosis of Down syndrome, prohibit an abortion from being performed if the unborn child’s heartbeat is detected, and provide options to families while respecting the dignity of fetal remains. Additionally, House Bill 2252 has been proposed to add an amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution clarifying that there is no right to an abortion or abortion funding. Abortions remain legal in the Commonwealth. While Pennsylvania’s Abortion Control Act regulates abortions, the legislation does not outlaw it entirely. I will continue to fight for pro-life policies.”
Republican U.S. Congressman Mike Kelly issued a statement calling this ruling “a major victory for the pro-life movement, but our work has only begun”. He went on to say “each of us has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.
Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Casey issued a statement calling the decision “a dangerous ruling” that won’t end abortions but “it will put women’s lives at risk”.
Democratic Pennsylvania Attorney General and candidate for Governor Josh Shapiro issued a statement that called the Supreme Court action “a shameful moment for our country and for the Court”.
Shapiro also clarified that for now, abortion remains legal in Pennsylvania through the 23rd week of pregnancy and afterwards when necessary to protect the life or health of the mother.
