The New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 to win Super Bowl 53 last night in Atlanta. It was New England’s sixth Super Bowl victory, tying the Pittsburgh Steelers for most all-time. Patriots receiver Julian Edelman was named the Most Valuable Player. He had 10 receptions for 141 yards.
New England quarterback Tom Brady now has the most Super Bowl wins in NFL history with six. At age 41, he also became the oldest quarterback to win the league’s biggest game. Bill Belichick also became the oldest coach to win the Super Bowl, at age 66. He joins George Halas and Curly Lambeau as the only NFL coaches to win six league championships.
Prior to the Super Bowl, former Pitt stand-out Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams, was named the NFL’s defensive player of the year. Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the offensive MVP. Former Penn State running back Sayquon Barkley was named rookie of the year.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Alan Faneca was passed over for Hall of Fame induction for the fourth consecutive time as a finalist. Aliquippa native Ty Law was voted in along with four others through the voting process.
