The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 Sunday at PPG Paints Arena. The Hurricanes scored within the opening minute of the game on a power play, and went on to score three power play goals. Carolina had built a 4-0 lead into the third period before Egor Chinakhov scored his 16th goal of the season, setting a new career high. The loss was just the second in regulation over the last nine games for the Penguins.
The Pens were coming off a big win the day before when they defeated Winnipeg 5-4 in a shootout Saturday. It was just their second victory in 11 shootouts this season. The Penguins host Colorado Tuesday with 12 games remaining in their regular season.
The New York Islanders defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 1-0 last night. The Islanders victory ties them with Columbus for third place in the Metropolitan Division. The New York win also kept the Penguins in second place by one point. The Penguins and Blue Jackets have played one less game than the Islanders.
