The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-1 last night. Bryan Rust had the game-winning goal and an assist. Rookie Ben Kindel scored his third goal of the season on a third period power-play. Goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped 26 shots as the Penguins handed Minnesota their fifth straight loss.
The Penguins improved to 8-2-2 and have taken over sole possession of first place of the Metropolitan Division by two points over New Jersey. The Penguins visit Winnipeg Saturday afternoon. Face-off is 3pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 2:30pm.
Kindel’s goal was his third of the season, and came during his 10th game of the year. It was a significant game for the young prospect, who has proven he belongs in the NHL. Once a young player reaches that 10-game threshold, it burns the first season of his entry-level contract. So NHL teams generally give junior-eligible players such as Kindel a trial of nine games or fewer before they decide whether to send the player back to his junior team or keep him in the NHL. The 18-year old Kindel was the Penguins first selection in June NHL draft, taken 11th overall
