Texas will open the college football season ranked #1 in the nation, a program first. The Longhorns earned the top spot in the first Associated Press poll of the year, ahead of Penn State. The voting was the closest preseason vote since 1998. The Longhorns earned 25 first-place votes. Penn State earned 23. It is the fifth straight season that an SEC team leads the preseason poll. Ohio State is third, followed by Clemson and Georgia.
