With snow and strong winds moving into the area this morning PennDOT is reminding drivers of safe driving practices.
- Slow down gradually
- Turn on your headlights if in a snow squall
- Increase your distance between vehicles
- Be Patient while driving in the storm
- Use your defroster and wipes
- Keep windows and wipers free of snow and ice
- During whiteouts, come to a complete stop only when you can safely pull over
- Do not stop in the flow of traffic as it can cause a chain-reaction collision.
- Do not pass a vehicle moving slowly or speed up
If you do in fact crash that are PennDOT also has these safety tips to follow.
- In most cases, you are safer in your vehicle with seat belts fastened.
- If possible, drive slowly to the front of the pileup and get off travel lanes.
- If you must leave your car for an emergency, try to wait until it looks safe.
- Do not stand outside your vehicle on or near the roadway.
