Pennsylvania is opting into additional unemployment benefits for those out of work in the state.
Officials said earlier this week that the state would ask the federal government for a new round of $300 in weekly unemployment benefits.
Jerry Oleksiak is the state Secretary of Labor and Industry and he says that while this program will provide a stopgap, he is hoping for Congress to enact another coronavirus relief package.
“Although Governor Wolf and I strongly feel that another extension by Congress of the $600 weekly pandemic unemployment compensation program is the easiest solution, [Labor and Industry] plans on applying to Federal Emergency Management Agency to hopefully a portion of the $44 billion program,” Oleksiak said.
Oleksiak also said that it will take the state some time to build a proper system, so the program may be delayed for a while.
