The Pittsburgh Penguins lost both of their weekend games at PPG Paints Arena as the NHL returned to play following the 4 Nations Tournament. Poor goaltending the biggest issue for the Pens in both games. They fell 8-3 to Washington Saturday, then dropped a 5-3 decision to the New York Rangers last evening.
The Rangers won the game despite having just 15 shots in the game, including a stretch of almost 16 minutes without a shot in the second period. Defenseman Ryan Shea had his first two goals of the season for the Penguins, both coming in the third period.
Sidney Crosby had an assist in Sunday’s game and became the ninth player in NHL history with 17 or more 60-point seasons. Erik Karlsson had an assist to continue his seven-game point streak.
The Pens visit the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday, then host the Flyers Thursday.
The Pens remain in last place in the Metropolitan Division. They are seven points out of a playoff spot with 23 games remaining in their regular season.
