The length of winter rests in the hands of a rodent this morning as we celebrate another Groundhog’s Day.
Thousands have gathered in Punxsutawney this morning waiting to see if Phil the Groundhog sees his shadow. The legend says that if Phil does indeed catch a glimpse of his shadow, winter rolls on for another six weeks.
However, if he does not, spring arrives early.
The annual tradition is attributed to a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog sees its shadow, it will return to its burrow, meaning there will be six more weeks of winter.
The holiday garners much fanfare in Punxatawney, with the ceremony being held at Gobbler’s Knob. It at times has had an attendance of 10,000. The first groundhog celebration for the day can be traced to the late 1800s.
