The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 in their final exhibition game of the season. One of the players acquired in the trade that sent catcher Jacob Stallings to Miami, Zach Thompson started for the Pirates. He allowed three runs, one earned, in four innings. Thompson had three strikeouts and a walk. The Pirates completed their spring 7-7-4 overall.
The Bucs will visit the St. Louis Cardinals to open the season Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15pm.
The Pirates made 10 roster moves yesterday, signing free agent catcher Andrew Knapp to back-up starter Roberto Perez. Knapp spent the previous five years with the Phillies, and didn’t make the Cincinnati Reds major league roster this spring. He opted out of a minor league contract with the Reds and signed with the Bucs. Outfielder Greg Allen is headed for the injured list with a hamstring problem. He is one of five players to begin the year on the injured list.
