The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a three-game series sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies following a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon. Andrew McCutchen drove in Oneil Cruz with the game-winning run in the eighth inning. Paul Skenes did not allow an earned run while pitching into the eighth inning. Rookie Braxton Ashcraft did not allow a run while getting the final four outs of the game.
The Phillies scored on a Nick Gonzales throwing error in the third inning. Despite not earning a victory, Skenes dropped his ERA to 1.88 this season. Ashcraft has not allowed a run over the first 7-1/3rd innings of his big-league career.
The Pirates also won 2-1 Saturday after a 5-4 victory to open their series with the Phillies Friday night. A Henry Davis home run in the seventh inning won Saturday’s game. The Pirates won on a ninth inning walk-off Friday. Davis also had a home run in that game.
The Pirates host the Miami Marlins tonight to begin a three-game series. First pitch is 6:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:15pm. Mike Burrows will start for the Bucs.
Prior to Saturday’s game, the Pirates announced their Hall of Fame Class of 2025. Outfielder Kiki Cuyler, who won a World Series with the Pirates in the 1920’s is joined by pitcher Vernon Law, who helped the Bucs win the 1960 World Series, and outfielder Al Oliver, who helped the Pirates win the 1971 World Series.
