The Pittsburgh Pirates protected minor league outfielder/first baseman Esmerlyn Valdez by placing him on the 40-man roster prior to the “Rule 5” deadline last night. Valdez had a breakout season in 2025. They also protected infielder Jack Brannigan and four other pitchers. To make room on their roster, the Pirates have designated four players for “assignment” – including relievers Colin Holderman and Dauri Moreti, along with outfielders Ronnie Simon and Alexander Canario. The final spot on the 40-man roster became available when infielder Cam Devanney announced he will pursue a professional opportunity in Japan.
The Los Angeles Angels have traded 32-year old outfielder Taylor Ward to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for 26-year old right-handed pitcher Grayson Rodriguez.
