The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 on the Bucs home opening day. The Cubs scored all of their runs via home runs. Pirates starter Tyler Anderson allowed 10 hits and three runs over 5-1/3rd innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five. Adam Frazier and Gregory Polanco had two hits each for the Bucs, who left 10 men on base.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at PNC Park. Hear the game on WISR beginning at 6:10pm. The Pirates and Cubs will wrap-up their three game series with a 1:05pm game Sunday.
The game saw the home debut of Mars graduate David Bednar who closed the eighth inning by setting up a spectacular diving catch by left fielder Bryan Reynolds with a fly ball out. Bednar displayed his western Pennsylvania roots by entering the game to the beat of the Styx song “Renegade” – which is used to pump up a Pittsburgh Steelers crowd late in games.
