The Minnesota Twins defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 in exhibition baseball Monday. Ke’Bryan Hayes and Erik Gonzales led the Bucs with two hits each. Gonzales hit his first home run of the spring. The Pirates wrap-up Grapefruit League play today against the Twins in Fort Myers.
The Pirates made several roster moves Monday with pitchers Geoff Hartlieb, Chasen Shreve, Steven Wright and Chase DeJong (De Yong) sent to Triple-A Indianapolis. Also sent down was outfielder Brian Goodwin, who lost a battle for the centerfield spot. The moves mean Mars native David Bednar will make the opening day roster. Chad Kuhl has been named the opening day starter in Chicago Thursday.
The Pirates have announced they will use Heinz Field as an alternate site for players working out for the first month of the regular. The extra site is necessary because the start of the Triple-A baseball season has been pushed back to May.
