The Pirates host the St. Louis Cardinals for a weekend series at PNC Park beginning tonight. First pitch is 6:35pm.
The Cardinals battery of Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina tied the major league record of 324 starts together as a pitcher and catcher combination in their 11-6 loss to Washington last night. The duo tied Detroit Tigers pitcher Micky Lolich and catcher Bill Freehan’s mark set from 1963 to 1975. Molina hit two home runs in the loss.
Despite the loss and a Milwaukee Brewers doubleheader sweep of San Francisco, the Cardinals still lead the National League Central by eight games.
Mars native and Pirates relief pitcher David Bednar has been named the team’s finalist for the Roberto Clemente Award, given annually to the MLB player who best represents the game through extraordinary character, community involvement and positive contributions. The Clemente Award has been given out each year following the Pirate legend’s death in 1971. Willie Stargell won the award in 1974. Andrew McCutchen won in 2015.
