The Miami Marlins defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 in 11-innings Thursday afternoon. It was the second-straight day that the Marlins defeated the Bucs in extra innings. The Pirates wasted another solid outing by a starting pitcher after Zach Thompson pitched into the seventh inning allowing just one run on four hits. Wil Crowe took the loss when he allowed two runs in the 11th. The Pirates had take a 2-1 lead in the top of that inning.
Three of the Pirates six hits were for extra-bases in the game, but they struck out 16 times and left 12 men on base. They went 1-for-15 yesterday with runners in scoring position.
The Bucs are currently 5-4 on their 12-game road trip and are now in Colorado for the weekend. First pitch tonight is 8:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 8:15pm.
The Pirates and Rockies will play back-to-back afternoon games Saturday and Sunday. Both games begin at 3:10pm. WISR pre-game Saturday is 2:45pm. Sunday’s pre-game begins with the Ben Cherington Show at 2:10pm.
Following Thursday’s game, the Pirates sent rookie outfielder Jack Suwinski back to the minor leagues. Despite hitting 14 home runs at the major league level, he has struggled in recent weeks and was currently hitless since July 5th.
