Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates has won the National League Cy Young Award, announced Wednesday by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Skenes was a unanimous winner, earning all 30 first-place votes.
He becomes the first Pirate to win the honor since Doug Drabek in 1990, and third overall. Vernon Law won the award in 1960. Skenes went 10-10 overall last season, but a 1.97 ERA, the lowest in the major leagues. The 23-yead old struck out 216 batters, the most for a Pirates right-hander in the “modern era” since 1900.
Christopher Sanchez of the Philadelphia Phillies was the runner-up, receiving all 30 second-place votes.
Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers won the American League Cy Young, his second straight. He became the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award back-to-back since Jacob DeGrom in 2018 and 19.
