The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 13-7 last night at Wrigley Field. Josh Palacios had a three-run home run which was part of a seven-run fourth inning for the Bucs. Ke’Bryan Hayes and Connor Joe added three hits each, as the Pirates pounded 15 hits in the game.
Mitch Keller earned his 13th victory of the season despite allowing seven earned runs over 5-2/3rds innings. He struck out six batters to pass the 200 strikeout mark. Among right-handed pitchers, only Gerrit Cole and A.J. Burnett have more in team history.
The Bucs and Cubs complete their three-game series tonight at 7:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 7:15pm.
The Cubs did not lose any ground in the Wild Card race despite the loss. The Cincinnati Reds lost to the Minnesota Twins 5-3 last night and remain a game behind for the final National League Wild Card spot. Miami also lost and remain a half-game out.
The Twins victory over the Reds reduced their magic number to win the American League Central Division to one.
Baltimore and Tampa Bay have clinched A.L. playoff spots. The Orioles lead the Rays by 2-1/2 games in the American League East.
Atlanta and the Los Angeles Dodgers have clinched in the National League.
