The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Colorado Rockies 14-3 in the opening game of their three-game series last night in Denver. The Pirates had 16 hits in the game, led by Mark Mathias, who had four hits. Four other players had at least two hits. Eight of the nine Pirate starters scored a run. Seven drove in a run. Andrew McCutchen and Jack Suwinski hit home runs. Suwinski hit a 461-foot shot.
Rich Hill went six innings, allowing one run on six hits. He walked two and struck out seven. The Pirates chased Rockies starter Kyle Freeland in the third inning. He entered the game with an ERA under 1.00. He left the game after allowing nine runs, seven earned.
The Rockies host the Pirates again tonight. First pitch is 8:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 8:15pm.
The Pirates are now 10-7 overall and tied with Chicago for second place in the National League Central, two games behind Milwaukee.
