The Pirates selected high school shortstop Konnor Griffin with their first-round pick in the Major League Baseball draft last night, with ninth overall pick. He is from Florence, Mississippi and was the first high school player taken in the opening round last night.
They also selected right-handed pitcher Levi Sterling with the 37th overall pick in the second round. He is a two-way star from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California. Ten picks later, the Bucs selected another shortstop in Wyatt Sanford from Frisco, Texas. He is committed to Texas A&M. His father Chance played 14 games for the Pirates in 1998.
The Cleveland Guardians made second baseman Travis Bazzana the first overall selection. Bazzana is the first player from Australia to be selected in the baseball draft.
Mars high school graduate JJ Wetherholt was selected seventh overall by the St. Louis Cardinals. He spent the last three seasons at West Virginia.
Mt. Lebanon pitcher David Shields was selected with the second pick of the second round by Kansas City.
