The New York Yankees defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-8 last night when reliever Wil Crowe allowed five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning without recording an out. Aaron Judge led off that ninth inning hitting his 60th home run of the season, leaving him one shy of the all-time American League mark set by Roger Maris. Then Crowe gave up a walk-off grand slam to Giancarlo Stanton. The Bucs had entered the ninth inning leading 8-4.
Rookie Luis Ortiz started his second major league game for the Pirates, and allowed just one unearned run on three hits over five innings. Bryan Reynolds and Rodolfo Castro hit home runs for the Bucs. It was Reynolds 24th of the season. The 11th home run for Castro.
The Pirates and Yankees complete their two-game series tonight at 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:40pm. The Pirates begin a seven-game home stand Thursday when they host the Chicago Cubs.
The Pirates have four players age 24 or younger who have 10 or more home runs, most in franchise history, and most in the major leagues.
The Bucs have promoted six players from Double-A Altoona to Triple-A Indianapolis. The Curve’s season ended Sunday. Among the promotions is former #1-draft pick Quinn Priester, who will make his first start at the Triple-A level tonight.
