The Pittsburgh Pirates shutout the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0 last night at PNC Park. Five Pirate pitcher, four of them rookies, held the Dodgers without a run, despite six walks. Braxton Ashcraft started the game and pitched three scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, walking four and striking out four. Mike Burrows pitched the next three innings and earned the victory. Dennis Santana struck out two of the final three batters to earn his 13th save of the season. He struck out Shohei Ohtani to end the game.
It was the Pirates major league-leading 17th shutout of the season. The victory clinched the series for the Bucs.
Bryan Reynolds and Andrew McCutchen hit home runs for the Bucs. Joey Bart added three hits and drove in the other Pirate run.
The Bucs and Dodgers complete their series tonight at 6:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:15pm. Paul Skenes will start for the Pirates. He is 9-9 with a National League best 2.05 ERA this season. Blake Snell starts for the Dodgers.
Shohei Ohtani’s pitching start last night was scratched due to a lingering illness. He was the Dodgers designated hitter.
Longtime Pirates play-by-play announcer Lanny Frattare was inducted into the Pirates Media Wall of Fame on Wednesday in a luncheon at PNC Park. He was introduced by Pirates team broadcaster Greg Brown, team president Travis Williams, former Pirates manager Jim Leyland and former public-address announcer Tim DeBacco. Frattare began broadcasting Pirates games in 1976 and continued through the 2008 season.
After retiring from as a Pirates broadcaster after 33 years, Frattare joined Waynesburg University in 2009 as an assistant professor of communications and the radio station’s faculty adviser, helping contribute to the next generation of broadcasters. He has also continued his own broadcasting career, currently doing play-by-play for the Pony League World Series in Washington and of West Virginia baseball on ESPN. Frattare becomes the 11th member of the Pirates Media Wall of Fame, which is displayed in the PNC Park press box.
