The Pittsburgh Pirates snapped an eight-game losing streak Sunday following a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Spencer Horwitz had a bases-loaded RBI ground out in the ninth inning, sending Ke’Bryan Hayes home with the winning run. Isaiah Kiner-Falefa had a career-high four hits in the game. Dennis Santana pitched a scoreless eighth inning and earned the victory. David Bednar earned his 13th save of the season.
Pirates starting pitcher Mitch Keller allowed one run over six innings, but again got little run support and did not figure into the decision. The Pirates have scored one run or less in 11 of Keller’s starts this season. His 14 quality starts are tied for second-best in the majors.
Tommy Pham hit his fourth home run of the season in the second inning, giving the Bucs an early 1-0 lead.
The Pirates will return to play after the MLB All-Star Break Friday when they open a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox.
The Bucs enter the All-Star Break 39-58 overall. They are 18-1/2 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division. They are 13-1/2 games back in the Wild Card race.
The MLB All-Star game takes place Tuesday night. Paul Skenes will be the National League starting pitcher for the second straight season.
